Strainers

Strainers are mechanical filtration devices installed in piping systems to remove unwanted solid particles from flowing liquids or gases, protecting downstream valves, pumps and instrumentation. Navjivan Valves supplies Y-type, T-type and basket strainers across a wide size range.

Product Overview

A strainer works by directing flow through a perforated or wire-mesh element that traps debris while allowing the process fluid to pass. Correctly sized and positioned upstream of pumps, control valves, steam traps and metering equipment, strainers significantly reduce wear, blockages and unplanned maintenance across a piping system.

Types

Types of Strainers

Y-Type Strainers — Navjivan Valves

Y-Type Strainers

A compact, Y-shaped body that can be installed horizontally or vertically, widely used on liquid, steam and gas lines where space is limited.

T-Type Strainers — Navjivan Valves

T-Type Strainers

A straight-through body style that allows a larger straining element for a given line size, typically used where a lower pressure drop and greater dirt-holding capacity are required.

Basket-Type Strainers — Navjivan Valves

Basket-Type Strainers

Use a removable perforated or mesh-lined basket housed in a larger body, allowing higher flow rates and easier cleaning — common on pump suction lines and larger pipeline applications.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should a strainer be installed?
Strainers are typically installed upstream of pumps, control valves, steam traps, flow meters and other sensitive equipment, to protect them from pipeline debris and construction residue.
What's the difference between Y-type and basket strainers?
A Y-type strainer is compact and economical for smaller lines, while a basket strainer offers a larger straining area and dirt-holding capacity, making it better suited to higher flow rates and applications with heavier debris loading.
How often does a strainer need cleaning?
Cleaning frequency depends on the debris loading of the system; a differential pressure gauge across the strainer is commonly used to indicate when the element needs cleaning.
